I have come across a lot of people who dislike Brinjal from the bottom of their hearts. I too was one of them, till the foodie in me got the better of me, getting me to be a little adventurous. Am I thankful for that change?? You bet !! One thing I realised after trying this dish was that, Brinjal wasn’t that bad after all. Gone were the days when I used to find an excuse to not have Brinjal. It was D’s turn now and I must say, he is following in my footsteps. He would plainly refuse to even taste. All this changed during our recent trip to a resort called Tribal Camp in Pench. We were served Baingan Bhartha during lunch there. The moment I tasted it, I was bowled over. That was the best Bhartha I have ever tasted in my life. Though it took a while to convince D to try it, he too loved it. He not only took a second helping, but went a step ahead and asked the waiter to get the recipe for him. Isn’t that cute?? Though I got the recipe, to my disappointment, it didn’t have the measurements. (more…)

Once we reached ISB, our first outing was to Hypercity in Inorbit Mall to check out grocery items. I was looking around checking out stuff, when D came running and said, “Mama, they have squid here.” The excitement of seeing Squid, his favourite was written all over his face. Needless to say, after a while, we were headed home with a packet of squid in our shopping bag. Squid thoran was the first idea that popped in my mind for the next day’s lunch. (more…)

I was really missing fish back in Agra and tried to make the most of my vacation by making varieties of seafood dishes. One such dish was a simple fish curry using onions and tomatoes. The first time I was introduced to this preparation was by a good friend Mrs Gordon. I was indeed surprised to see that fish could be prepared in similar way as chicken masala. The only difference was tamarind pulp is added for the sourness. (more…)

While preparing for our move from Agra, I had almost wound up the kitchen and had very limited stuff in the pantry. So when I had to whip up something for breakfast, the first thought that came into mind was Potato Rosti. Rosti is a dish supposedly originated from Switzerland. It is pretty much similar to hash browns and very easy to make. (more…)

A statement while talking to your college friends is “Those were the days!!! Wish we got those days back !! “. Never in my dreams did I think that I would get an opportunity to enjoy college life at a latter stage of life. So when J got admission to the prestigious Indian School of Business, Hyderabad, I was truly elated. Well, I could enjoy the college life and needn’t worry about the exams and studies…Bliss !! Isn’t that a double whammy??
I was soooooo looking forward to the life at ISB. When we moved into our fully furnished studio apartment within the campus, the first thing I checked was the Microwave only to be disappointed a bit. Unfortunately it doesn’t have the convection function…which means… my baking has to take a backseat till I find a solution to it..
The last week was pretty hectic with activities and hence it took us even longer to get the kitchen running. A constant thought that was nagging me was the fact that I haven’t updated my blog. So the moment I managed to spare some time, I decided to share some Kerala recipes with you, my readers. (more…)

It was during one of those internet browsing sessions, that I came across Salami-Bread Roses. Though the idea did ring a bell, I was too preoccupied to give it a second look. Nevertheless, the thought stayed in my mind, and while preparing the dough for Cinnamon Rolls, it popped out. So I took out a bit of the dough and made two roses. Voila!! It was a beauty !! Hats off to the person who came up with this amazing idea.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘Financier’?? Someone with more money than he can spend!! I couldn’t, in my wildest of dreams, imagine that it could also mean something edible, except of course for a cannibal.
Now that I have dug deep, let me shed some light on it. Financiers (Fee-nahng- syehrs) are French tea cakes made with egg whites, almond powder and flour. The distinctive feature of the recipe is beurre noisette (brown butter). The name financier is said to have been derived from the traditional rectangular mold, which resembles a bar of gold. Another theory has it that the cake became popular in the financial district of Paris surrounding the Paris stock exchange.(Courtesy: Wikipedia). (more…)

Two days ago, while doing some last minute shopping, we happened to cross the ‘Chat Gali’ or the ‘Eat street’, where people were enjoying Papdi Chat. Though I was highly tempted to try it out there, I resisted my temptation as my last venture had landed me with a sore throat. I had then sworn not to have chat outside home and have been following it ever since. My first thought after reaching home was, “if not at the Chat Gali, why not make it at home” !! So I started with the process right away. (more…)
