Bisi Bele Bhaath (Hot Lentil Rice)

Bisi Bele Bhaath is a wholesome, one pot meal popular in Karnataka. The name Bisi Bele Bhaath means Hot lentil rice. I have tried quite a few variations of this but the recipe of Tarla Dalal is my all time favourite. My favourite combination with Bisi Bele Baath would be curd and pickle. Yum !!!

Bisi Bele Bhaath (Hot Lentil Rice)

Bisi Bele Bhaath is a wholesome, one pot meal popular in Karnataka. The name Bisi Bele Bhaath means Hot lentil rice. Ingredients
  

  • 3/4 cup potatoes Finely chopped
  • 3/4 cup capsicum Finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup beans Finely chopped french
  • 1/2 cup carrots Finely chopped
  • a few Curry leaves
  • 1 cup Raw rice
  • 1/2 cup Pigeon pea (toor dal)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons Tamarind pulp
  • to taste Salt
  • 3 tablespoons Ghee

To be roasted and ground

  • 1 tablespoon bengal gram Split
  • 1 tablespoon black gram Split
  • 1/2 inch Cinnamon - stick
  • 1/4 cup coconut Grated
  • 5 chillies (broken into pieces) Whole dry kashmiri red
  • 2 tablespoons Coriander seeds

Instructions
 

  • Soak the rice and pigeon pea separately for 30 minutes.
  • To be roasted and ground: Heat a teaspoon of oil in a pan. Add all the ingredients and roast till golden brown in colour. Switch off heat and allow to cool. Once cool add a little water and grind to a fine paste. Keep aside. .
  • Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pressure cooker, add all the vegetables, curry leaves, rice, pigeon pea and turmeric powder, mix gently and sautxe9 on a medium flame for 2 minutes.
  • Add the tamarind, salt, prepared paste and 4 cups of hot water, mix gently and pressure cook on a high flame for 4 whistles.
  • Lower the flame and pressure cook for another 2 whistles.
  • Allow the steam to escape using natural release method, before opening the lid.
  • Add the ghee, mix well and serve immediately.
