Even though I’m very fond of fish, buying them is a rarity as D isn’t particularly fond of fish. Thankfully he loves other seafood varieties, which is a huge relief. The other day when I had this craving for Kakka Irachi (Clam meat), I didn’t have to think twice while placing the order. Soon after placing the order, I was looking for a recipe, which was different from my usual preparation. That’s when I came across the recipe by Sini’s Menu. I prepared the recipe with little tweaks of my own.
Cleaning clams is slightly cumbersome as you have to pinch and remove the dirt from each clam meat. The dish is slightly on the Hot side. You may adjust the use of chilli/pepper to suit your palate.

Spicy Kakka Irachi Ularthiyathu (Spicy Stir Fried Clam Meat)

  • 500 gms Clam meat
  • to taste Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • a few Curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons Oil
  • 7 Crushed Shallots
  • 5 Crushed Garlic cloves
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 2 teaspoons Coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon Chilli powder
  • 2 teaspoons Pepper powder

To be Ground coarsely

  • 1/2 cup Grated coconut
  • 7-9 Dried red chillies
  • 7-9 Garlic cloves


  • Pinch and remove the dirt off the clam meat.
  • Rinse a few times and drain.
  • Take the clam meat in an earthen pot.
  • Add salt, turmeric powder and a few curry leaves and mix well.
  • Cover and cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, till the clam meat is cooked through and the liquid is evaporated.
  • Coarsely grind the coconut, dried chillies and garlic and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add the crushed shallots, garlic and curry leaves and stir for a few seconds.
  • Add the coriander powder, chilli powder and pepper powder and mix well.
  • Add the cooked clam meat, followed by the ground coconut mixture. Mix well.
  • Cook for another few minutes.
  • Switch off heat and serve hot with Rice.
