Kecap Manis (Indonesian Sweet Soy Sauce)

Before we left for our vacation to Bali last year, my only request to J was that we should spare some time to do some grocery shopping. He readily agreed. A day before we returned, he took me grocery shopping as promised. It was quite a delightful shopping, as my boys also actively joined me in choosing stuff. One such ingredient was Kecap Manis, also known as Sweet Soy Sauce. This sauce is a must have ingredient in the Indonesian pantry.
As soon as we settled in home after the trip, I was keen to try some Indonesian recipe. My first choice was Nasi Goreng, Indonesian Fried Rice. The boys loved it so much that I made it very often.
The other day, I decided to make Nasi Goreng. While taking out all the ingredients, my heart sank a bit to see that I had hardly 1 tablespoon of Kecap Manis. That’s when I remembered that one could make it using Soy sauce and brown sugar. I decided to try it out using jaggery. As I had the original Kecap Manis to compare, I was doing a taste test and adding more jaggery, till I felt it was right. Was pretty pleased with the result, and the satisfaction grew multifold, when D did tasted both sauces and said they taste the same. Relief !!! Now I don’t have to do research on “where to buy Kecap Manis” 🙂
