Kozhi Varutharachathu (Chicken cooked with Roasted Ground Coconut and Spices)

As mentioned in my previous post, my favourite accompaniment with Pidi is Kozhi varutharachathu. Usually chicken is cut into tiny pieces for this dish, but I chose to use medium sized pieces as D likes it that way. You can use beef instead of chicken in this recipe to prepare Beef Varutharachathu.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 kg Chicken
  • 3 tablespoons Coconut bits (slices)
  • to taste Salt

To be Roasted and Ground

  • 1 cup Coconut Grated
  • 1/2 tablespoon Fennel seeds
  • 5 shallots Sliced
  • - 5 cloves Garlic cloves Sliced
  • 1 chopped ginger " - piece
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 3 teaspoons Coriander powder powder
  • 1 - 1/2 teaspoons Chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper powder powder
  • 1 teaspoon Garam masala powder

Instructions
 

  • If you wish, you can cut the chicken into smaller pieces.
  • Heat a pan and roast the coconut, fennel seeds, garlic, ginger and curry leaves till brown in colour.
  • Add the spice powders and roast till the mixture turns dark brown.
  • Switch off heat and allow to cool.
  • Grind the mixture with some water, to a smooth fine paste.
  • Add the ground mixture, salt and coconut bits into the chicken and mix well.
  • Cover and cook till the chicken is done.
  • If serving with pidi, you may need a slight watery consistency.
  • If you want thicker consistency, take off the lid and let boil till you achieve the desired consistency.
  • Serve hot.
