Mulaku Thoran (Stir fried Green Chilli with Coconut)

 

Couple of weeks back, while talking to my MIL, she casually named the dishes she had prepared. What intrigued me was the mention of Mulaku Thoran, which I had never heard of. She was as excited as me while narrating the preparation.
J loved the dish.
The chillies used for this preparation are the big variety which is very mild. You may retain the seeds of the chilli if you wish.

Mulaku Thoran (Stir fried Green Chilli with Coconut)

Ingredients
  

  • 250 gms Green chilli
  • 1/4 cup Coconut Grated (or more)
  • 2 shallots
  • 1 - 2 Garlic cloves
  • to taste Salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder powder
  • a few Curry leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Mustard seeds

Instructions
 

  • Cut the chilli lengthwise. If you wish, you may de-seed them.
  • Chop finely and keep aside.
  • Pulse the grated coconut, shallots and garlic coarsely. Keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to splutter, add curry leaves and turmeric powder.
  • Add the chopped chilli and mix well.
  • Cover and cook on low heat for a few minutes.
  • Add salt, mix well and cook till the chilli becomes soft.
  • Add the grated coconut mixture and mix well.
  • Cook for another minute.
  • Switch off heat.
  • Serve hot with rice.
