Uggani (A breakfast snack with Puffed Rice)

Few days back, while discussing about breakfast dishes with my friends, someone mentioned Uggani. That caught my attention. On further inquiry, I came to know that the dish is made with puffed rice and is similar to Poha. Uggani seems to be popular in Rayalaseema, Telangana, Marathwada and North Kar


  • 4 cups Puffed rice
  • 1 Onion big
  • 2 - 3 Green chillies finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup coconut Grated
  • 5 - 6 Cashewnuts chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Bengal gram Roasted and ground (Pottu kadala/ Putana)
  • a few Curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander leaves chopped


  • Soak the puffed rice in some water for 2 minutes.Squeeze out the water and keep aside.
  • Heat a pan with tablespoon oil.Add the mustard seeds.When they start to splutter, add the curry leaves followed by onion.Saute till they turn translucent.
  • Add the green chilies and stir for a minute.Add the chopped cashew nut and grated coconut.
  • Stir for another minute.Add turmeric powder and ground bengal gram, stir for a few seconds.
  • Add the drained puffed rice along with salt and mix well.Switch off heat.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.Ideally to be had with Mirchi Bajji.
