Korean Vegetable Hotteok/Hoddeok

Hotteok/Hoddeok is a popular street food. It is basically fried,stuffed bun. It's ideal to be served as a snack.

For the Dough

  • 2 cups All purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 2 teaspoons Dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 cup Lukewarm water

For the Filling

  • Oil for frying
  • 1 medium Chopped onion
  • 100 gms Chopped carrots
  • 1 cup Chopped spring onion
  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • ¼ teaspoon Black pepper powder
  • 2 tablespoons Soy sauce
  • 85 gms Noodles


For the Dough

  • Combine the warm water, sugar, and dry yeast in a large bowl and keep aside.
  • Once the mixture has frothed, add salt and 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and stir well.
  • Add flour and mix it with a wooden spoon, until the dough looks smooth.
  • Cover and keep aside till it doubles in size.
  • Knead the dough. Cover and keep aside.

For the Filling

  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  • Add the noodles and cook till the noodles are cooked through.
  • Drain and pour cold water to avoid further cooking of the noodles.
  • Keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add the chopped onion and saute till translucent.
  • Add the chopped carrots and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add the chopped spring onion, followed by noodles, pepper powder and soy sauce.
  • Mix well. Adjust the seasoning.
  • Cook for another minute and switch off heat.

For the Hotteok

  • Heat oil for frying the hotteoks.
  • Apply oil/water in your hands generously.
  • Take a small portion of the dough and flatten it.
  • Place a spoonful of the vegetable mixture in the centre.
  • Bring all the edges together and seal.
  • Place the Hotteok in the hot oil.
  • Slowly press down the hotteok with a spatula to flatten it.
  • Once it is golden brown, flip and cook the other side.
  • When both sides are done, remove and place on an absorbent paper.
  • Repeat the process with remaining dough and mixture.
  • Serve hot.
