Masala Chai (Spiced Tea)

Last week, while I was down with fever, my household help offered to make some "Masala Chai" for me to relieve my throat ache. Though I always prefer tea without any additives, I reluctantly gave in as I wanted some relief to my pain. My apprehensions had more to do with the taste of this Tea than i


  • 1 cup Water
  • 2 Clove
  • 1 cardamom Black
  • 1/2 inch Cinnamon
  • 1/2 inch Ginger
  • Star anise - a petal
  • 5 - 6 Black Peppercorns
  • 1 teaspoon Tea leaves (for milk tea or 1/2 teaspoon for black tea)
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar (Optional)
  • 1/2 cup Milk Boiled


  • Crush all the spices on a mortal and pestle .
  • Put it in a pan along with water and tea leaves.
  • Let it boil
  • Simmer till the quantity reduces to half.
  • Add sugar and boiled milk.
  • Serve hot
