Chemmeen Ularthiyathu (Stir fried Prawns with Coconut slices)

The mere mention of the word "Chemmeen Ularthiyathu" would make any seafood crazy Keralite like me, drool. This has been one of my all time favourites since childhood.


  • 500 gms Prawns Shelled , deveined
  • 3-4 Gambooge/Kudampuli
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kashmiri Chilli powder
  • 1/2 cup Coconut sliced and cut into bits
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • 1/4 cup Water
  • to taste Salt

For the stir fry

  • 1 cup Sliced onions
  • 1 - 2 teaspoons Kashmiri Chilli powder (adjust to suit your liking)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder powder
  • 2 sprigs Curry leaves


  • Take water, gambooge, salt, sprig of curry leaves, turmeric powder and chilli powder in an earthen pot and keep on flame.
  • Let the water boil so that the sourness of the gambooge blends in the water.
  • Add the coconut bits and once the water reduces almost to half, add the prawns and mix well.
  • No need to add extra water.
  • Cover and cook till the water dries up.
  • The prawns should be curled up and have a orange hue.
  • Switch off the heat.
  • Meanwhile heat another pan with oil.
  • Add the curry leaves followed by Onion.
  • Saute till the onions wilt.
  • Add the chilli powder and turmeric powder and saute for a minute.
  • Now add the cooked prawns and mix well.
  • Lower the heat and let it cook, stirring in between till the prawns turn nearly reddish brown.
  • Adding an extra tablespoon of oil will help it crisp up better.
  • Switch off heat. Serve hot.
